After a disappointing campaign with Parma which ended in relegation to Serie B, Igor Budan will be eager to impress at Euro 2008 and perhaps earn a lucrative move back to one of Europe's major leagues.
Now 28, Budan was a late bloomer at international level, having only won his first cap last year when his aerial prowess and consistent goalscoring record in Italy could no longer be ignored.
Born in the seaport town of Rijeka, Budan played for his local club before making the short hop across the Adriatic to play for Venezia. He has remained in Italy except for a short loan spell at Swiss club Bellinzona in 2001.
In fact, Budan has spent much of his club career as a 'striker for hire' in Italy. Having started in Venice, he was first loaned to Empoli and although he soon won a permanent switch to Palermo, he never made a first-team appearance for them, instead being sent back to Venezia, then onto Ancona, then Atalanta and finally Ascoli.
Most of his football had been played in Serie B so the move to Parma in 2006 finally gave him a shot at the big time. And Budan grabbed the opportunity, netting 13 times in his first season to finish just outside the division's top 10 goalscorers.
His first chance to play for Croatia duly followed in February 2007, when he came off the bench in a 2-1 friendly win over Norway.
However, Budan only played 11 minutes in Euro 2000 qualifying - in the 2-1 victory at home to Macedonia the following month - and having been sidelined with a leg injury in recent months, there is little to suggest he will be more than a bit-part player at Euro 2008.
