Rovers initially brought David in on a season long loan from Arsenal, but impressed enough for the deal to be made permanent during the January 2006 transfer window for an undisclosed fee.
After impressing in his first season with the club, Bentley has gone onto cement himself the right-wing spot in Rovers' midfield with a series of fine performances that eventually saw him win the 06/07 Player of the Season award. February 2007 saw him sign a new contract until 2010.
A regular at under 21 level, Bentley made history when he became the first Englishman to score at the newly rebuilt Wembley Stadium in March 2007 in an under 21 match against Italy.
That resulted in a call-up to the England 'B' side where he put in a man-of-the match performance in England's win over Albania. Since called into the senior squad, David finally made his long-awaited senior debut, coming on as a substitute at Wembley in England's 3-0 over Israel in September 2007 and went on to make his first England start for new boss Fabio Capello against Switzerland in February 2008.
