Ashley Young earned a place for himself in England Under-21 (U-21) League squad in February, 2006. In September, 2006 he was called to play for the U-21 again against Switzerland, and has played 10 matches in total for the team. On August 31, 2007 he was included in the English squad to play against Russia and Israel in Euro 2008 qualifiers, and later again to face Estonia and Russia. He earned his first international cap on November 16, 2007, when the team played in a friendly match against Austria.
Ashley Young started his professional career with Watford Football Club, and made his English Premier League debut for the club in September, 2003 at the age of 18. In 2004-05 season he played in 34 Premier League matches and 4 in the League Cup for the club. For his contributions to the team in the season, Ashley Young was awarded Watford’s Young Player of the Season award. In the 2005-06 season, he appeared in 43 matches for the club and scored 15 goals. In the same season, Watford won the Football League Championship play-off and got promoted to play in the Premier League in the 2006-07 season.
On January 18, 2007, Aston Villa offered him £9.75 million with add-ons which Ashley Young accepted and scored on his debut for the club on January 31, 2007 at St James' Park against Newcastle United. He appeared in 13 matches for the club in that season and scored 2 goals in total.
He played in the 2007-08 season for the club and assisted in 17 goals, the second most number of assists by a player in the Premier League for the season. Ashley Young was best recognized when he was included in the Premier League’s Best XI Team of the Year that season. He was then the only Aston Villa player to be featured in team.
