Football player and manager, born in Suriname. The son of a former Suriname international, he began his professional career at age 16 with Haarlem, made his debut for Holland in 1981, and gained honours with Dutch teams Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven. In 1987 he was named European Footballer of the Year, later joining AC Milan for a then world record £7·5 million fee. He captained Holland to win the European Championships (1988), and with AC Milan won the European Cup (1989, 1990). In 1995 he joined Chelsea, and the next year took over as player-manager, leading his team to FA Cup victory (1996–7). He was manager at Newcastle United (1998–9), then returned to Holland.
